Preventive care
Your dentist will advise you on the best ways to help you prevent tooth decay and gum disease. It is important to brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes (most importantly last thing at night) with a toothpaste containing fluoride. It is recommended not to rinse after brushing as this washes away the fluoride which strengthens your teeth. Your dentist will show you various aids to clean in between your teeth to remove the plaque that a toothbrush cannot reach.
Fluoride helps to strengthen your teeth and protects against tooth decay. Your dentist may recommend you use a fluoride mouthwash at a different time of day to brushing, or may prescribe a toothpaste which contains a higher amount of fluoride.
Frequent consumption of sugar contributes to developing tooth decay. It is important to limit any foods or drinks that contain sugar to mealtimes only, and keep snacks and drinks between meals sugar-free to reduce your risk of tooth decay.
Scale and polish
This helps to remove the hardened plaque, otherwise known as tartar or calculus, that builds up on your teeth which a toothbrush cannot remove. If this is not removed regularly, it will increase your risk of developing gum disease.
Scale and polish – from £55
Periodontal treatment
If you develop gum disease, this results in the destruction of the gum and bone surrounding your teeth, eventually leading to loose teeth and tooth loss. Your dentist will work with you to help you clean your teeth effectively at home and in the dental surgery to improve the health of your gums.
